Aspartate aminotransferase, commonly known as AST, is an enzyme found primarily in the liver, heart, muscles, and kidneys. When cells in these organs become damaged or diseased, AST is released into the bloodstream, making it a valuable marker for detecting tissue injury. A blood test measuring AST levels helps healthcare providers evaluate liver function and diagnose various medical conditions affecting the liver and other organs.
The AST test is frequently ordered as part of a comprehensive metabolic panel or liver function test panel. Doctors typically request this test when patients show symptoms of liver disease such as jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain, nausea, or unexplained fatigue. It is also used to monitor patients with known liver conditions, those taking medications that may affect the liver, or individuals with risk factors for liver disease such as excessive alcohol consumption or viral hepatitis. Additionally, AST levels may be checked when heart or muscle damage is suspected.
Normal AST levels generally range from 10 to 40 units per liter of blood, though reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories. Elevated AST levels can indicate liver damage from conditions like hepatitis, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, or liver cancer. High levels may also result from heart attack, muscle injury, or certain medications. When AST is elevated, it is often measured alongside another liver enzyme called alanine aminotransferase or ALT. The ratio between AST and ALT can help doctors determine the specific cause of liver damage, as different conditions produce different patterns of enzyme elevation.
The AST blood test requires a simple blood draw from a vein, usually in the arm. No special preparation is typically needed, though patients should inform their healthcare provider about all medications and supplements they are taking, as some substances can affect results. The test is generally safe with minimal risks, such as slight bruising or discomfort at the needle site. Results are usually available within a day or two and should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in the context of other test results and clinical findings.
