Hemoglobin A1c, commonly known as HbA1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a blood test that measures the average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months. This test is essential for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes. When glucose circulates in the bloodstream, it naturally attaches to hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The more glucose present in the blood, the more hemoglobin becomes glycated. Since red blood cells live for approximately three months, the HbA1c test provides a long-term picture of blood sugar control rather than a snapshot of glucose levels at a single moment in time.
The HbA1c test is reported as a percentage. For people without diabetes, a normal HbA1c level is typically below 5.7 percent. A level between 5.7 and 6.4 percent indicates prediabetes, which means blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. An HbA1c level of 6.5 percent or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes. For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, the American Diabetes Association generally recommends maintaining an HbA1c level below 7 percent, though target levels may vary based on individual circumstances, age, and other health conditions.
The test requires a simple blood draw and does not require fasting, making it convenient for patients. Unlike daily blood glucose monitoring, which can fluctuate based on meals, stress, or physical activity, the HbA1c test is not affected by short-term changes in blood sugar. This makes it a reliable tool for healthcare providers to assess how well diabetes treatment plans are working and whether adjustments to medication, diet, or lifestyle are needed. Regular HbA1c testing, typically every three to six months for people with diabetes, helps track progress and prevent complications.
Elevated HbA1c levels over time can lead to serious health complications including heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, eye problems, and poor wound healing. By monitoring HbA1c levels and working to keep them within target ranges, people with diabetes can significantly reduce their risk of these complications.
